Students from Cornwall College Camborne have been helping staff at Truro’s Royal Cornwall Hospital.

The group of students from the Access to HE Nursing, Health and Social Care course were given access to many of the wards in the hospital and were encouraged by staff to shadow and ask questions to get a true view of daily life in a busy hospital.

The Access to Nursing, Health and Social Care course is designed for those looking to further their career and complete a degree in that area. Some of the group are already working in a healthcare facility but looking to get a formal qualification.

Martin Simpson, 24 from Camborne, said: “The placement at Treliske was an insight into the hospital environment and helped me to gain valuable experience to assist me with my studies to become a paramedic.”

Kate Teagle, work experience co-ordinator for the Knowledge Spa, based at RCHT Treliske, said: “The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust is pleased to be able to provide information and support to students who are interested in pursuing a career in the NHS. “We feel that it is hugely important that these students are able to have a taste of ‘hospital life’ before they choose their future careers.

“By offering the work experience placements the students are able to use their experience to help them make informed career choices and, where necessary, support their application to Higher Education. It is in the Trust's interest to help and support these people as they will become our future workforce."
