A team from Helston Community College proved a successful addition to the regional heat of the Senior Teams Mathematics Challenge for schools.

The group of four, made up of Brook Hocking, Shane Cripps, Lisa Gong and David Hosking, performed extremely well against 16 other teams competing for the prize.

They came fourth overall, in the school’s first ever appearance, and was the highest placed Cornish state-funded educational institution.

Going into the contest it was Helston’s aim to split up the dominance of the Truro based schools and colleges that normally take the top spots in the regional heats. Upon arrival it was evident that there were a much higher number of contestants than expected, with some teams coming from outside of Cornwall.

This did not deter the students, who set about all three rounds with confidence and calmness. Each round tested their teamwork, mathematical brain and speed.

Maths teacher Suzy Ellis reserved special praise for the students. She said: “Our team performed exceptionally well, and were a huge credit to the college in both their achievement and their behaviour.”

Mrs Ellis was delighted with the success and was looking forward to entering the competition again.

“We are genuinely thrilled to have achieved such success on our first ever entry to the Senior Team Challenge, and will hope to improve upon it in future years to come.”
