Councillors are to write with “strong opposition” against part of Helston Business Park being developed with homes.

As first reported by the Packet last week, the Homes and Communities Agency has agreed an arrangement that would accommodate two parties interested in the land. Their proposals are for the majority of the site to be developed for business use, with part to be turned into an “older persons” affordable housing scheme.”

However, Helston’s town councillors believe the site should be kept solely for business. Mayor Jonathan Radford-Gaby said: “Now the ridiculous environmental and sustainable requirements have been lifted I do not foresee any issues with the land being quickly developed.

”He proposed that council write a letter of strong opposition against the housing scheme, “no matter how small,” so that the “expanding population of Helston has an opportunity to open and grow businesses on the very small land available.”

Councillor Gillian Geer said: “I do know people that tried to get businesses started there that were turned away because they couldn’t afford the granite to face the front of it. I hope we’re now contacting all the people that said ‘I fancy something there’ and say that’s not the case now.”
