Cornwall Council’s housing department is to carry out a survey to discover exactly how many properties in Falmouth are currently houses of multiple occupation (HMOs).
Falmouth Town Council has been advocating the introduction of Article 4 legislation which would help control the number of HMOs across the town.
Previous attempts were blocked at Cornwall Council, but there has been a change of heart since the local council elections earlier this year.
Falmouth and Cornwall Council member Candy Atherton has taken the lead and secured the support of councillor Geoff Brown, portfolio holder for homes and communities.
At last week’s meeting of the town council, Ms Atherton said the survey results would be compared to those of a similar exercise undertaken in 2010.
Reporting on a meeting held at County Hall, she said: “I felt there was a more positive response from some of the officers, but it is still a bit of a battle.”
