A record number of students were offered jobs at Falmouth Marine School’s annual industry day.

Representatives from over 20 companies attended the event to meet and interview students. PGL, a leading provider of school trips and children's adventure holidays in France and Spain, interviewed several watersports students on the day.

PGL representative, Dave Jury, said: “I was highly impressed with the students I interviewed today and would happily employ them all. I travelled four hours to get here this morning because I am guaranteed a high quality of RYA DIA qualified instructors.

“The way the course is designed is perfect for the industry, the students can complete by Easter, which is when the season starts. They have their dingy and sailing qualifications along with coaching experience and relevant knowledge to be a valued team member.”

Representatives from across the marine industry both locally and nationally were also present, including Sunsail, Neilson, Cremyll Keelboats, Pendennis Shipyard, Voyager Adventure, the Royal Navy and Rockley Adventure.

Marine Science degree student Dephiny Cesarano, who secured a job offer from Voyager Adventure, said: “I’m delighted that I have left here today with a job. I will be spending my summer in Greece working with the hospitality team.”

Watersports student Matt Riddout also had a successful day. He said: “I had several interviews and left with three potential job offers, I now need to decide which one I want.

“It’s fantastic that the college not only ensures that we have the skills and qualifications to get our dream jobs but they provide the opportunity to meet employers and apply for those jobs.”

The marine industry day is supported by and held at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth and forms part of the college’s commitment to forge long-term relationships with the industry, helping students to gain employment and to help businesses in the sector grow.

Once the students left the event, businesses were invited to join other business in the marine sector for an afternoon of networking and to discover latest developments in the industry and support available from the Cornwall College Group.

David Stedman, head of Falmouth Marine School, said: “It is great that the industry day was such a success. As well as helping students find employment it strengthens our ties with industry both locally, across the country and internationally.”
