A police investigation is underway into how a fire broke out at the home of the Cornish Pirates.

Firefighters from Penzance were called to the rugby ground in Alexandra Road at 8pm yesterday.

They found a marquee to be well alight, with the fire taking up a 40m by 20m area.

A total of 30 firefighters fought the blaze at its height, with the flames spreading to a nearby HGV lorry.

The fire is not believed to have affected the main stand and no one was injured.

An investigation into the possibility of arson is now underway, with the matter passed to the police.
