The holidaymaker who lost his life after being swept into the sea at Loe Bar on New Year’s Day has been named.

Tributes have been paid to Harry Swordy by friend Tom Luddington on his blog.

Mr Luddington said: “Harry was such an amazing character, so full of life, warmth and plans for the future. He will be so missed.”

His friends are calling on the Met Office to rename the storm, named by the US media as Hercules, as “Storm Harry” in memory of Mr Swordy.

“It feels right that a legend begin about wonderful Harry, that he danced up the biggest storm ever, barefoot in the sea,” added Mr Luddington.

Mr Swordy was described as a professional story teller whose stories were “full of beauty, wonder”, “clever and moving.”

Cant believe someone is calling this idiot wonderful. He put so many peoples lives at risk trying to rescue him because of his drunken stupidness.

Well, it is always a tragedy when something like this happens, and my thoughts go out to the young lads family during this difficult time.

I must admit, I have read a few stories about this incident online, and they all say the same thing. The storm should not be renamed, he was reckless and so were his friends. Why honour that with naming the storm after him. when their actions put the rescue services in danger during one of the worse storms in a long time.

A terrible tragedy which could have been avoided , but i think its wrong to name the storm after him. Acts of bravery and heroes normally get something named as a tribute to them or in their memory bit it does not apply in this instance. thoughts go to his family and friends at this distressing time.

What really is the point in saying thoughts go to the family etc if you are still going to point out it could have been avoided etc dont you think they know that. I dont think they would need to be told that now. If you really sent thoughts to them then why not cut out the obvious points of what the poor lad did wrong. Most people do stupid things in their lives.

I admire those that said stupid/ignorantc because they said what they really thought without going on to add hypocrital thoughts to the family etc. All i was saying is why bother sending thoughts to the family if you are still going to have a little dig about how it could have been avoided. Of course you can have your say, i'm just voicing my opinion the way i read all the comments.

Doubt if anyone would say face to face they think he was stupid or ignorant either, i was not hypocritical or having a little dig as you put it. but i guess we are going to have to agree to disagree. Going back to what the article is about it is very sad .
