Traffic in Porthleven’s Fore Street actually appeared to have reduced following the closure of the main road between Helston and the port.

This was the news from Cornwall Councillor Andy Wallis, when he updated his fellow members of the parish council about the ongoing closure of the B3304.

This came into force on Monday last week (January 6) and is expected to |continue until April 4, to allow for strengthening works. Specialist equipment has had to be brought in to complete the job.

Diversions are now in place directing motorists via the alternative route into Porthleven, off the Penzance road and through Stopgate.

It was initially feared that this would cause chaos in Fore Street, due to increased two-way traffic clashing with parked cars.

Mr Wallis had promised to investigate installing traffic lights if the situation deteriorated, but he said at the last meeting of the town council that traffic had actually dropped.

“I’m keeping an eye on it,” he said.

While he had received a number of complaints from people claiming they did not know about the closure, some residents were happy that buses were being rerouted through the estates again.

Although this was causing a ten-minute delay at either side, it was seen as a benefit – but Mr Wallis stressed this was only a temporary measure, while the road closure was in place.
