Helston 'pasty drive through' site to become second hand car centre

Falmouth Packet: Helston 'pasty drive through' site to become second hand car centre Helston 'pasty drive through' site to become second hand car centre

A site in Helston that was to become a 'pasty drive through' will be returning to its roots after being sold to a Longrock-based car sales company.

Chris Nicholls Motors bought the Hilltop Garage site at the top of Sithney Common Hill last Friday and plans to expand the business into more of West Cornwall.

The 2.25 acre site, which was previously run as the Ward’s Vauxhall dealership, will become a showroom and workshops for the company, offering repairs, servicing and at a later date MOTs.

Owner Chris Nicholls, who worked for Flora Motors in the town for nearly 20 years before setting up his own business, described it as “a natural expansion,” adding: “The opportunity came up for the Helston site. I’m very familiar with the area and the geographics of it should attract customers from Falmouth, Hayle and the Lizard Peninsula.

“Being that we’re independent we’ll be able to offer a selection of cars that are probably not for sale at the moment. It will give customers greater choice and hopefully more competition means better deals for them.”

The second site means the creation of three immediate jobs, with another two people to be recruited shortly.

All sales of second hand cars will be handled by Trevor Angove, a former community police officer for Porthleven.

“The response from people in the area has been nothing but positive. They’re pleased to see the site being used in a positive way,” added Mr Nicholls.

The company announced the purchase on its Facebook page, describing it as a “fantastic acquisition.”

It added: “Our Penzance site will continue unaffected and will also benefit from the extra stock capacity.

“Thank you to all our hard working colleagues making this possible.”

The opening date will be announced in due course.

In my opinion this makes sense, the current buildings are equipped appropriately for this type of business (and it has the advantage of a relatively newly installed toilet suitable for those with disabilities within the building) Hopefully this business will also be acceptable to neighbouring properties.

Me thinks Ron is reading the website. Here we have a car dealership and there was already one there before so competiton shouldnt be a problem. No smell no litter no anti social hours no pasty and food trade taken away from the town. Nice one. If Ron wants to be a Cllr he better get used to a bit of criticism so shame he didnt just ignore it on here then he could have kept commenting and given us his opinion on this car place instead of just pressing thumbs down with the rest of the sheep. We have last laugh over those that only vote and dont comment because we get to actually have an opinion lol and vote lol

i THink its the best thing for the site to be run by a car dealership again , no food sales so it wont take trade away from the town and the residents nearby should be ok with it too.

Ward Vauxhall sold plenty of cars from there and had a constantly busy workshop schedule. The firm has other outlets at Truro etc and chose only to cut back by moving out of Helston, much in the same way many big dealerships have cut back all over the country.

I think what perhaps some people may possibly need to accept, is that the pasty place is not happening, the applicants voluntarily withdrew and sold the premises, a car dealers is going to Hill Top, life does not always go the way one may like, as for the original recommendation of refusal by the Town Council for a pasty drive through, the council runs under a democratic process, we are lucky enough to benefit from democracy in this country. I personally am glad Hill Top will once again be a thriving business. Good luck to the new owners.

If Ron is still going to vote on here he might just as well comment. I do hope we dont get any sulky people that like to give out criticism but cant take it themselves join the council. Good luck to the car sales at Hill Top, hopefully you will do well, much better than an empty site.I think some people need to grow up and stop sulking about the pasty place.

It is going to be a car dealers and maintenance workshop, not a petrol garage and associated shop, I don't know of any other car dealers that sells pasties.
Yes, they could sell pasties as well if they care to adhere to all the hygiene rues and have the added expense of having fridges installed and maintained. I can't really see them bothering.

Yes, they may well do, however, they are not car dealers and are irrelevant to Hill Top. I have yet to find a car dealers that sells take away pasties! In my view it would be neither practical or financially viable.

Yes i agree that the places you mention probably do , but it wouldnt work in a car dealership as they wouldnt have the same number of customers per hour/ day as these outlets, so therefore it wouldnt be practical or financially viable to have all the equipment they would need

I saw the sold sign by Christopher's up there, wondered what it was going to be. Why do so many people seem to be obsessed with pasties, isn't there enough places in town that sell them. Don't think a car dealers would have bought the place if they didn't think it would work, its different from a great big multi national thing like Vauxhall, this is an independent dealer. Good luck to them, better than an empty site.

I agree with your comment and wish them well. I am not obsessed with pasties but a few commenters were very disappointed and blamed the Council for not allowing the pasty drive thru (even though the applicant withdrew his plans ) and wont let the matter drop, hence my reply to peter gg
