Questions over Helston Business Improvement Partnership paid job role for councillor

First published in News

Helston Business Improvement Partnership and the town council could be forming 'closer links' if one of the members takes on a paid job there.

Justine Hornsby has 'put her name forward' for the part-time paid administration role for HBIP, taking over from Rachel Jones.

The council will consider whether it is appropriate for Ms Hornsby to continue to be the council representative on the partnership, and whether to approve a dispensation that would allow her to still speak and vote on HBIP matters at council meetings.

Personally I do not see a problem with her being a town councillor whilst having the paid job of part time secretary with the HBIP and speaking on such matters within the council, however, I categorically do not think she should be allowed to vote on matters concerning the HBIP as she would clearly have an interest. I believe is this is allowed to happen it will open the town council up to criticism.

I agree Gill, no one i dont think should be able to vote on things to do with the the Bip group if they are paid by them as an employee. I know being a Cllr doesnt stop you having an interest in loads of things or groups but then you shouldnt be able to vote when it comes to it. There are loads of Cllrs that belong to other things or have an interest but they dont vote.

I live in Helston and of course some of those outside three miles are interestef or they wouldnt shop or work in Helston or have involvement in other things in the town. I think that is a typical small minded prejudiced insular thinking comment.

In answer to your question, I would say yes, several Helston residents that I know of that live within the three mile radius do not approve of a position where any town council member would vote on anything they held an interest in, particularly if it involved any group gaining in any financial way. Hence the reason someone previously reported Councillor John Boase when he voted on something that it was alleged he held an interest in.
