It is that time of year again as people are to nominate a group or person who has been working for the environment in the Helston and Lizard Peninsula area.
The annual John Mackay Award, organised by campaign group the Lizard Peninsula Friends of the Earth, celebrates people who have made “a positive environmental impact” in the widest sense, consisting of a perpetual trophy carved from Cornish oak and a small gift. It is the result of a bequest from the late Porkellis resident John Mackay and the scheme is now in its eleventh year. It recognises individuals, groups and businesses and has very wide-reaching criteria.
Last year the trophy and prize went to the Meneage Street greengrocers and delicatessen Fruit and Veg 4 U for their support of local growers and providing a competitively priced in-town alternative to supermarket shopping.
Previous winners include the Sustainable Trust for its work protecting and enhancing the natural and built environment, farmers' market coordinator Joanne Schofield, Helston Museum and Helston Community College Windy Webbers' wind turbine project.
