A special appearance from the Fisherman’s Friends marked the tenth anniversary of the sinking of the Bugaled Breizh off The Lizard.
Although the male singing group from Port Isaac has yet to return to full performing, following the death of one of their members, the group wanted to show solidarity and support of the Fishermen’s Mission in Newlyn, for which the event was raising money.
It was from here that the crew members of the stricken ship made their last calls to their families in Brittany, ten years ago, saying they would soon be home.
Just a few hours later they were sunk, with no survivors, and the reason for the sinking remains a mystery to this day.
The marking of the anniversary took place at the Top House at The Lizard, and also featured performances from the Boscastle Buoys and Padstow fishermen.
A raffle and the Fishwives Choir CD – made in support of the mission by widows, mothers and daughters of fishermen lost around the Cornish coast – helped raise £130 for the Newlyn mission, which was received by Julian Waring who spoke about its work in caring for visiting fishermen and their families.
