The contractor in charge of installing new benches in Helston town centre has been paid after the council agreed the work had been carried out satisfactorily.

Last week the Packet reported that the town council were withholding payment until concerns over the 13 benches were resolved, after it was revealed at their meeting that 11 of the benches were already coming loose.

Mayor Jonathan Radford-Gaby and chairman of the amenities committee Justine Hornsby carried out an inspection of all the benches within the 24 hours of the meeting and authorised payment the same day.

Town clerk Chris Dawson said the pair were satisfied that the contractor had carried out work as instructed.

However, it had been decided that more fixings were needed and a further two brackets would now be added to each bench to make them more secure.
