Pupils at Cury School are toasting the success of a new breakfast club that means they are getting a good start to the day.

Between 8.30am and 8.45am each day the youngsters are able to arrive early to enjoy a feast of breakfast goodies, from cereal to toast and fruit – or all three. Friday also sees bacon served.

More than a third of pupils now sit down together for breakfast, with 11 out of 30 joining the club that only began last week.

The club is run by Brenda Gunn, a teaching assistant who lives in the village, and costs £1.50 per day.

Liz Tate, school business manager, said: “It’s proving very popular.”

It was introduced as part of a government initiative to make sure all school aged children start the day with a proper breakfast.

A message was sent to all schools from Cornwall Council, which offered funding to help set up breakfast clubs.

A questionnaire was sent out to parents with the suggestion and it came back with a near unanimous thumbs up in favour.
