ZELDA School in Gweek is among the latest groups across the TR12 postcode area to benefit from support from the Goonhilly Wind Farm Community Fund.

The school requested funding to build a large covered outdoor classroom so that outdoor learning would not be hampered by wet weather. Zelda School has doubled pupil numbers this year and the previous covered areas were no longer adequate.

The school received £2,500 and a frame was made from locally sourced wood by a local carpenter.

A canvas roof was made by a local canvas worker, furniture and other resources were sourced locally.

Every morning the children arrive at school and play in the outside area. The new classroom has allowed them to set up opportunities for learning that they could not have done otherwise.

Operator REG Windpower donates £48,000 a year to support good causes. The Cornwall Community Foundation administers the fund, and a panel of local people decides twice a year which applications are most deserving of support.

Claudia Richard, REG Windpower’s community relations manager, said: “We are pleased to support education on the Lizard, and we hope the fund will help Zelda School continue to teach the importance of caring for our environment. Goonhilly Wind Farm is popular with schools, universities, and community groups and we are proud to host visits for schools that are interested in learning about renewable energy.”

Other groups to benefit from the fund in 2013 included St Keverne Male Voice Choir, Mullion Cricket Club, Sunshine Café Memory Club, St Keverne Village Hall, Gweek Village Hall and the Mawgan Recreation Ground and Hall.

The Cornwall Community Foundation welcomes applications from the TR12 postcode area for the Goonhilly Wind Farm Community Fund, the deadline for applications for the next grants is March 31.
