Crew race to make repairs to ship with engine failure off the Manacles

Falmouth Packet: Ship with engine failure off the Manacles Ship with engine failure off the Manacles

There are reports of a ship with engine failure being battered by huge waves as winds up to severe gale force nine just off the Manacles.

’Express 1’’ is a livestock carrier, it used to be a UECC car carrier that was laid up in the river Fal.

The ship is just outside the harbour limits and has put two anchors down, which Falmouth Coastguards say seem to be holding it in place. Adding there is no immediate concern.

The crew are trying to undertake repairs

The inshore weather is currently S-SE force seven to severe gale force 9, with it expected to turn W-SW dropping to force 5 to 7.

The Salvage tug Vortex is standing by, with one of the options being to bring the ship back into to Falmouth.

More as we get it.

Just did a google search and marine traffic search on this vessel, In 1990 10,000 sheep on the Cormo Express died from lack of ventilation. Yes I appreciate that was over 20 years ago but, lots of animals stuck in there on a rough sea and could be stuck there for days yet.

I believe the vessel has no livestock on board, but I found it interesting to know what did happen to its previous livestock in 1990. I cannot understand why any livestock have to be shipped around, it seems cruel and unnecessary. I would much rather see it used as a car carrier.
Is there an update please?
