A pair of yobs who launched an unprovoked attack on two terrified elderly women returning home from a Boxing Day party have been described as "despicable" by police.

The two pensioners, in their 70s, are too upset and scared to talk at length about their ordeal, after the windows of their car were smashed with rocks by teenage thugs.

The women were driving through Marlborough Avenue, near the junction with Silverdale Road, at around 9pm, on their way home after an evening out last Tuesday when two men stepped out into the road for no apparent reason.

When the men, thought to be aged around 18, failed to move, the women were forced to stop the car so as not to run them over. It was then that the teenagers picked up two large rocks and hurled them through the two rear windows of the car, smashing the glass and just missing the two women.

Although severely shaken by this, the two women were not injured and managed to drive on again and return home as quickly as possible.

PC Steve Hawkins, based at Falmouth police station, condemned the actions of the teenagers.

He said: "It's despicable and cowardly, bearing in the mind the age of the ladies in the car. The rocks going through the window could have caused serious injury, had they gone through the window where the ladies were sitting. When you have got two women in their 70s driving home after a night out and they have had two rocks thrown through their windows, it's quite horrific really."

PC Hawkins urged anybody who had seen the incident take place or may have found out about it after the event - including the teenagers' friends who may have been told about it - to contact him at Falmouth police station on 08452 777444, quoting reference number GP/06/3351.
