MULLION 2 MOUSEHOLE 3

THAT little bit of luck that is required to turn defeats into victory is still proving an elusive commodity for Mullion who suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat against Mousehole at Clifden Park.

The Seagulls, who are in second place in the Jolly's Combination League, took the points thanks to a little sharper finishing in the box.

The home side began well and with the wind behind them enjoyed the lion's share of possession in a game dominated by the conditions.

Following a series of corners Mullion deservedly took the lead after 18 minutes when yet another corner by David Cheetham was knocked in at the far post by Ben Allen.

Mark Buchanan had an impressive game at the heart of the home defence, but the equaliser came when Ali Thomas was played in behind the defence and although Glen Williams did well to parry his shot, Jowan May was on hand to knock in the loose ball.

Minutes later the visitors took the lead when Joe Day tucked away a pass from John Tonkin and Mullion's task became even more difficult early in the second half when the visitors snapped up a third goal when Tonkin headed in a cross by Day.

Mullion never gave up the cause and battled hard against the wind with Gary Richards going close with a shot that skimmed the post in the 70th minute.

Minutes later the home side got the reward they deserved when they pulled a goal back through Matt Fox who turned several defenders before beating the goalkeeper with a shot from outside the box.

There was still hope for the home side, but solid defending by the visitors snuffed out any further threat.

Manager Terry Stidwell said despite losing it was a good performance: "Considering where Mousehole are in the league and where we are, I don't think we are too far away.

"I couldn't have asked for any more from the team because I thought they all gave 100 per cent.

"I think the side is improving and I am looking forward to the New Year with renewed confidence that we can move up the table."
