The Fishermen's Mission is raising funds to help fishermen who have been stuck in port during the recent bad weather.

In particular, the charity is aiming to help inshore fishing crews trapped in Cornwall and along the south coast, as well as in Wales, which have borne the brunt of storms and heavy seas.

A spokesman for the mission said: "Many fishermen, particularly those in coves, with tidal restricted harbours and those launched from beaches have not been able to fish since December.

"How would you cope if you hadn't been paid for two months?"

The appeal comes as a leading spokesman for the Cornish fishermens' organisation the Cornish Fish Producers Organisation raised concerns over crews taking more risks in current conditions.

Andy Wheeler told the BBC that premium fish prices caused by low stocks may lead fishermen to take more risks than usual in weather they wouldn't go out in, in search of higher returns.

The winter storms have prevented fishing, caused the loss of fishing pots, smashed harbours, and in extreme situations boats have sunk in the harbour.

The mission is making immediate emergency grants of up to £500 towards rent, bills and food available to  fishermen who are in need.
