Porthleven toilets to stay open year round after town council steps in

Porthleven Town Council is to take over temporary running of Shute Lane toilets in order to reopen them during the winter months.

This was agreed with a view to considering taking full control of the toilets at the end of the summer season.

The agreement was reached by councillors last Thursday, when they voted to take up a “tenancy at will” from Cornwall Council, which should come into almost immediate effect.

It was after hearing that while Cornwall Council was prepared to open and maintain the toilets during the summer season, they would be closed during the winter months from September until March.

Councillor Andy Wallis, who sits on both councils, said: “The Shute Lane toilet is marked as ‘strategically important’ – but only in the summer and for tourism.”

Town members, however, believed the toilets were too important to close for six months of the year.

This is good news, one does however wonder why they allowed a situation whereby both sets of toilets were closed to occur.
To have at least one toilet open all year in every town and village is stretegically important, there is a vital need by tourists and locals all the time not just as a seasonal perk.

Never mind what they are marked as, common sense tells you a toilet is needed all year round, or perhaps he only uses his toilet at home in the summer months?, that statement is contradictory anyway because tourism is all year round. Did he forget he represents the administration at CC, and it is CC that marked them only for summer and tourism.

In fairness, Councillor Andrew Wallis is portfolio holder for children and young people, not public toilets! He cannot make all the decisions on his own at Cornwall Council.

I was pleased to see that Shute Lane toilets were today open.
I give credit to Porthleven Town Council for taking action and not allowing the closure of both public toilets to continue. I hope they take transference from Cornwall Council on a permanent basis and do not allow both sets of toilets to be closed at the same time in the future.

Cllr Wallis is not a Cllr for a strategically important toilet, he is simply a Cornwall Cllr. You seem to me to have a habit of being rude about people on here, if you want to make your comment personal about Cllr Wallis then why don't you have the decency to post under your own name. Its too easy to make fun of people or be rude on here when you can use a false name. Dictionary definition of 'Wally' "(Walli)" is slang for stupid person, Cllr Wallis is not stupid.

It is great Shute Lane is open again, Porthleven is a fantastic place, but it does need a toilet open all year.

No he might not be able to make all the decisions on his own at CC but seeing as he picks up a hefty allowance for being a cabinet member, shouldn't he at least try to fight for facilities for his own area surely. He is a TC member as well, yet in the article above it sounds to me as if he's trying to justify the toilets only being open in the summer and the rest of the TC are saying the toilets are too important to be closed six months of the year. Good on the rest of the TC. So if he's trying to separate himself from the TC decisions why doesn't he get off the TC? What was the reason so many people left the TC in the past? I think he won't admit when he is wrong and you of all people Gill I would have thought would agree with me there?, after what I've been told by someone else that he told you that your comment was negative about the people doing the clean up just because you said it was a shame the TC didn't open their toilets. Before he pre judges other people's opinions/comments maybe he should get all the facts I think.
Of course I think it would be beneath a Cllr to admit they could be a tiny bit wrong about someone else's opinion/comment.
I think they should cut Cllrs allowances, why should they be exempt from all the cuts.

I do not think Councillor Andrew Wallis is trying to disengage himself from the Town Council or their decisions, whether or not he was a Cornwall Councillor he may or may not agree with other Town Council members, all Town Councils vote on decisions and various members may possibly not agree with each other.

I really could not say why some people may have left Porthleven Town Council in the past, but referencing past Packet reports, I would suggest you may possibly be surmising incorrectly.

In fairness, Councillor Andrew Wallis has fought for many things for the area he represents and been successful on numerous occasions.

I believe the problem with expecting anyone to admit they may be wrong, is that it relies on whether or not the person believes they are wrong, if anyone genuinely believes they are right, then they are hardly likely to admit they are wrong! I personally try to see things from others points of view as well as my own.

True, but then on the other hand you could still have a Cllr that knows he's wrong but still won't admit it. In this particular case I would opt for my theory.

In the two and a half years i l ived in Helston in the area covered by Cllr Wallis i thought he seemed to me to be fairly good but im not a bit surprised this has kicked off about the toilets because i think he likes things his way and wont take kindly to criticism. The toilets should be open all year and if he wants to save money he should stop doing stupid things like paying to put railings at the bottom near the blue bouy steps which got washed away after high tide lol and this was ages before any of the rough weather storms. As for telling Gill her comment was negative, perhaps he should take a look at the negativity he seems to be displaying about his strategically marked important for summer and tourism only toilet.

I think what it comes down to, is if all other local towns provided public toilets through the winter months then why didn't Porthleven? We're all paying for them on our local tax so why should Cllr Wallis get the benefit of using any public toilet elsewhere in the county paid for by others, if he wanted to, while he as a Cornwall Cllr and Town Cllr didn't seem to me to want to provide any in Porthleven. Why would people be negative towards others just because they didn't say what a wonderful job people did cleaning up and just said its a shame the TC didn't open the toilets, I wouldn't say what a wonderful job people did if I was there myself because I wouldn't want to blow my own trumpet, unlike some Cllrs.
I think some Cllrs are happy for people to say when they get something right but not when they say something like the toilets are closed.
I think it really is time to cut Cllrs allowances, surely if they were dedicated they would be happy to do it for less money to show some commitment to all the cut backs, Town Cllrs get no allowances and work hard.
