Students at Falmouth Marine School have taken part in a range of sporting activities over the past month and been rewarded for their efforts with discounts, treats and offers.

Cornwall College, of which the marine school is part, has signed up to Healthy FE, a national campaign which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of those who study or work in the further education (FE) sector. As part of its Health Kick month, various activities were on offer across all seven campuses, including Falmouth.

At the marine school students have been cycling for free smoothies on the Sustrans smoothy maker bike, taking advantage of discounted swimming at Ships and Castles, and playing golf and table tennis with the new table donated by Cornwall Sports Partnership.

The students also took part in a rowing challenge, with the person rowing the furthest distance in two minutes given a £20 voucher for Ann’s Cottage.

Marine sports science student, Dale Parker was crowned champion this week and said: “It’s great that a marine sports science student won the challenge, it may have been a bit embarrassing to be beaten by a marine biology student.”

Cornwall College sports maker, Jamie Tresidder, said: “It has been brilliant to see so many students from Falmouth Marine School enthusiastically engaging in the sports, physical activity and health activities that have been set up as part of the Healthy College campaign.

“The activities that have run throughout January will act as a catalyst for FMS students to engage in more regular and sustained physical activity throughout the rest of the year and therefore make FMS a healthy college all year round.”
