Falmouth firefighters handed out £7,000 to several local charities and good causes at the weekend as they distributed the money made on the gate at last year’s fireworks display.

Among those to receive a share were Falmouth United, Marlborough School, Stithians lantern parade, the Lions Club, Helford SLC, Mawnan School, Falmouth Stroke Club, the Crypt Pre-School, Samaritans, Admiral Nurses, Pendennis Youth Band, PHAB Club, Falmouth Aquarium, Falmouth and Penryn Sea Cadets, Falmouth SLSC and the Firefighters’ Charity.

In addition to this, £550 has been put towards the visit to Cornwall by children affected by the Chernobyl disaster. Cornwall Fire and Rescue support these visits and host the children at various stations.

The presentations were organised by Giles Kent and Stuart Williams who said: “It’s great that we are able to do this and that the public continue to support the fireworks.

“We have been doing the display for many years now and whether it is a dry, clear night or pouring with rain, the public are always there. Without them, we would not be in a position to help out local charities and good causes.”

The cheques were handed out at Falmouth Fire Station, where on the same day, people were invited in for a tour of facilities and get a feel for the life of a firefighters.
