Pupils at St Francis School in Falmouth were getting into the blitz spirit for their World War II day.

The children spent the day dressed as wartime civilians and evacuees, and covered all aspects of life from the declaration of war in 1939 to the outbreak of peace in 1945.

They listened to a recording of Neville Chamberlain speaking at the start of the war, experienced evacuation and air-raid drills, sang songs to keep up morale, and made jam tarts and Spam fritters.

Teaching assistant Kristie Nicholas said: β€œIt’s just a whistle-stop tour really, but it brings this topic to life if the children can get some sort of idea of what it was like.”
