Roland’s Happy Plaice in Porthleven has been serving up a storm to help raise funds for the 771 Squadron Search and Rescue charity.
Every year the popular fish and chip takeaway chooses one charity to support, with Cancer Research and Children’s Hospice South West receiving funds in previous years.
This year the rescue squadron based at Culdrose were chosen, with the chippy opening especially on Monday to raise cash.
Staff gave up their time for free to serve fish and chips for only £3, with the full £3 going into the fund.
Customers also had the chance to purchase an Ace of Clubs playing card, the squadron’s logo, for a minimum donation of £1. These then had messages written on the back and they were suspended from the chippy ceiling for all to see.
This year the fundraising total topped £1,040 in just four hours.
Roland Lowery, the takeaway owner, said that they choose to support the squadron’s fundraising efforts as they do such a great job helping locals and visitors alike.
Adding that the fundraiser was great fun, with family and friends arriving to give their support and staff working for free Twenty members of the squadron arrived at Roland’s Happy Plaice on Tuesday to receive the cheque, say thank you to everyone involved, and enjoy a portion of fish and chips.
Roland wrote the total on a giant banner and, with the help of the youngest serviceman, who pulled the cord, unveiled it to the visiting service personnel The squadron will share the funds between The Royal Navy and Royal Marines charity, children’s cancer charity Clic Sergeant and Cornwall Hospice South West.
