There was a resplendent spread as Penryn Women’s Institute’s annual arts and crafts show took place last week.
Members of the institute entered items with enthusiasm into the 18 classes, separated into two categories at the Stuart Stephens Memorial Hall.
In the arts and crafts display there were examples of knitting, needlepoint, and even handwriting, while the cooking competition showcased some perfect pasties and sumptuous sausage rolls along with cakes and pastries.
Masterchef baking standard won Pam Seabridge the cookery cup with her consistently high marks for heavy cake, shortbread, sausage rolls, Victoria sponge and Cornish pasty, while Kathryn Hodge took the prize for arts and crafts through her knitting and photography, before being named overall winner.
Margaret Williams, Penryn Women’s Institute president, said: “It was a wonderful effort, we had 75 entries from people and everybody took part.
The item that caught everyone’s eye was a ragging worked brooch. Using a similar technique to that used in the war, pulling strips of colour cloth through hessian to create rugs, this time a more decorative item was created around a button.
The demanding task of judging was the responsibility of Cait Hutchings and Rosemary Webber.
