Enthusiasm is building for this year’s May Day celebrations in Penryn, which are to be held in the Glasney valley for the second year running.

Members of the Glasney Greenspace Regeneration Project have said they are pleased that Penryn Town Council has granted them permission to relocate the maypole and the attendant festivities to the valley.

The celebrations were traditionally held on Penryn’s Memorial Garden, but last year the group stepped in to host the event at the last minute when due to unforeseen circumstances it looked as if May Day wasn’t going to happen, and this year they are hoping to make it a bigger event by inviting community groups to run stalls and workshops.

Pip Carlton-Barnes, secretary of the Glasney Greenspace Regeneration Project, said: “We are over the moon to be hosting the May Day celebrations again this year and even more so because we have been given permission to relocate it to the towns beautiful Glasney valley.

“The more we thought about it and what May Day stands for it just made sense that it should be held in the valley. We have invited the local schools to take part and help us to continue the tradition by adding their own legacy to it. So many towns have traditional events and we should ensure that one of the oldest towns in Cornwall holds on to theirs.”

The dance will start from the old Glasney College field at 10am. Children will then dance through the valley and end under the magnificent college viaduct with the traditional Maypole dance.
