This was the moment that Falmouth took delivery of the UK’s first barrel of fair-transport rum, delivered by sail from the Dominican Republic.
The rum, which crossed the Atlantic in the hold of the schooner Tres Hombres, was greeted by a cheering crowd and live music at North Quay before being transported by horse and cart to Penryn’s Rebel Brewing company to be bottled for sale.
Using traditional methods to get the barrel from the quayside to the brewery ensures the rum, selected by skipper Arjen van der Veen from a Dominican distillery, has been carried from source to bottle without the use of fossil fuels.
