The group behind plans for a new skatepark for Falmouth have set up an online petition after becoming frustrated by the time it is taking to move the project forward.

The town’s current skatepark at Dracaena was opened in 2000 and the metal ramps are now nearing the end of their life.

The Falmouth Skatepark Committee was formed in 2010 with the aim of creating a new, improved park on the site and despite winning support from local councillors and the community, the project has stalled while negotiations take place over the future of Dracaena playing fields.

The town council wants to take over the management of the land from Cornwall Council with the idea that it would then work with the Dracaena Centre to run it.

There has been some resistance to this from the county council, but councillors were told last week that the portfolio holder was now on board with the idea.

The skatepark committee, though, is keen to keep the momentum going for a new facility and member Natalie Rigby attended the town council’s surgery to raise their concerns.

“We cannot do any fundraising unless we know specifically what we are fundraising for,” she said.

“The frustrating thing from our point of view is we started this project years ago and in the past year projects in Penzance and Newquay have completely overtaken us. We now have to come up with something different from those places.”

The online petition seeking support for a new skatepark was launched at the start of the month and has a target of 2,000, but has so far only attracted around 250 names.
