The first employee ever hired by a Penryn company has retired after spending his whole working life at the firm.
Mike Reed has worked at medical device manufacturer Research Instruments since leaving school in 1965, and in over 48 years the engineering production team member literally helped to build the company when he joined the team who constructed the original Penryn factory.
Bill Brown, managing director of Research Instruments, said: “Spending one’s working life in the same company through thick and thin is an astonishing achievement.”
Mike became the company’s first employee when it was a small microelectronics business set up in a brick built shed in a London back garden, and grew with the company, moving with them to Penryn in 1970.
Now, after 48 years, the company has said goodbye to Mike, who said that retirement doesn’t daunt him as he is looking forward to spending more time fishing, a pastime he took up on moving to Cornwall.
