Helston ready for Flora Day after big town tidy: PICTURES
10:00am Monday 5th May 2014 in News
A team of town tidiers have been turning the tide on litter in Helston in the run up to Flora Day.
As part of Helston Business Improvement Partnership’s Town Tidy Week, volunteers started cleaning the town on Saturday, April 19, and continued every afternoon up to last Friday.
Brian Curtis, a member of the team, said: “We had a reasonable start at the weekend. So far we’ve cleared about 150 rubble sacks full of soil, litter and dead plants.”
The team has been sweeping and shovelling in town and pressure washing pavements and shop fronts in Coinagehall Street. They were assisted by members of the Light and Life Church, who helped to clear around Trengrouse House and Trengrouse Way, and were given support by a team from RNAS Culdrose on Thursday and Friday.
Brian said the town was looking surprisingly good. “A lot of places we attacked last year we haven’t had to do this year,” he said. “There seems to be a more positive outlook in the town, that places are staying tidier. In some places, like Peacock Lane, we cleared soil that was eight to 12 inches deep, so it has taken a lot of years to build up. Hopefully people will take more care of it now.”
A post tidy thank you evening was held at the end of the week at which everyone was able to celebrate their success with a pasty.
