Cornwall Wildlife Trust is asking for help finding a seafood expert to help highlight the abundance of sustainably harvested local seafood available in Cornwall and to encourage the public to 'Buy Cornish'.

The Cornwall Good Fish Guide project will focus on a website that will provide clear and accurate information to help consumers make environmentally informed decisions when purchasing locally caught seafood.

Designed to also work on smart phones and tablets the website will also be a "useful tool to fish sellers and buyers", says the charity.

Which added that, "vital input from those in the fishing industry will help this valuable resource to be as effective in protecting our precious fish stocks as possible".

The project is funded by the Fisheries Local Action Group, and Cornwall Wildlife Trust will be developing the project this year with a website launch in Spring 2015.

Matt Slater of Cornwall Wildlife Trust said: "Our Cornish fishing industry is something we should all be proud of, but knowing what fish to buy is a complicated issue. We want to address this by supporting the industry, highlighting good practices and encouraging locals and visitors alike to buy Cornish.

"At this early stage of the project we really need the input of all those involved in the fishing industry from fishermen and fish sellers to processors and restaurateurs to get involved and help shape the project.

"We have created an online survey that allows you to easily help guide our work."

The Cornwall Good Fish Guide will bring together all existing information on fish stocks, local fishing methods and management. The mobile phone friendly website will include a free, searchable directory of fishermen, fish sellers, and restaurants that make it easier for the public and for restaurateurs to source locally caught fish.

Additional features will includ recipe ideas, fishermen’s sightings and interesting records and recent news.

Ruth Williams, manager of the Living Seas programme at the trust said: "We have a lot of work to do meeting partners, gathering data and pulling together information ready for a website launch in Spring 2015, but we hope people get involved at this early stage to make this a really useful resource for Cornish fish."
