Domino’s Pizza’s plans to extend its opening hours in Falmouth to meet demand are being opposed by town councillors who fear the business would become a magnet for drunk people leaving pubs.

The company, which operates a take-away and delivery service from premises on The Moor, is seeking to vary a condition of its planning consent to allow it to extend its trading hours from 11pm until 1am, seven days a week.

The application was debated by Falmouth’s planning committee when members were addressed by Richard Unwin, speaking on behalf of Domino’s, who said: “My clients tell me there is tremendous demand for this service from people who work late or arrive late in Falmouth for their holidays.

“It is felt they are losing business, but more importantly that the service can continue without causing any nuisance. There have been no calls to these premises by the authorities since it opened.”

Responding to a comment by Councillor Alan Jewell that the requested opening times could attract people “who have had a few,” Mr Unwin said: “There will be customers leaving the pubs, but in reality they don’t want to wait for 15 minutes for a pizza to be cooked for them when they can get fish and chips or a kebab which can be consumed more quickly.”

The committee voted four to one to recommend Cornwall Council refuses the application.
