A special meeting of a Helston history group will take place next week when the doors will be opened to anyone wanting to see a DVD by an evacuee during the war.

The Baden and Martin History Group has extended its spring meetings by a month in order to see the film created by Micky Downes.

Doors open at 10am next Wednesday, May 14, ready for the start of the DVD at 10.30am.

Entry will be £5, to include the cost of a pasty at noon. Call Baden Christophers on 573263 to give names and pasty requirements.

Mr Downes will stay throughout the meeting and will answer questions about the DVD and his life as “An Adopted Cornishman.”

The meeting is open to anyone who would like to attend, irrespective of whether they have been to previous meetings.

Mr Downes was introduced at the group’s last meeting by Derek Watts, who had given a talk on being evacuated to Mullion in 1940 and now lives in part of Helston’s former children home Vyvyan House – which coincidentally is the subject of a planned reunion being organised by the history group for those who lived there as children.

Two years ago Mr Downes responded to a radio phone in appealing for evacuees.

After hearing his conversation on air his daughter said she had no idea about that part of his life – which prompted him to create a DVD, detailing his research into his life from leaving London as an evacuee, visiting and photographing places he visited as a boy.

It is this research that will be shown at next week’s meeting.
