Hundreds of local residents, students and staff took advantage of the range of sporting and cultural activities on offer at the Tremough Community Games held at the Penryn Campus on Sunday.

Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union (FXU) was “overwhelmed” with the response to the annual event, which had initially been launched to coincide with the 2012 Olympic Games.

The weekend’s event attracted businesses, charities and community groups from across the county, culminating in an action-packed programme of events, with something for all the family.

Visitors were invited to try a whole host of activities including self-defence, community art, dryland fishing and Quidditch, and there were ramps for skateboards and scooters as well as lots of demonstrations for people to join in with. Even the Mayor of Penryn, Beverly Hulme who officially opened proceedings, had a go at Zumba with Embrace Dance Fitness.

All activities were free and those who took part were given a commemorative frisbee. Some of the more popular workshops and demonstrations included Taekwondo with European champions UKITF; handling a live snake with the University of Exeter’s biosciences department; and making your own smoothie by cycling on an exercise bike.

The FXU Green Living Project also used the event to kick-start the Penryn Campus allotment, and invited local children to dig and plant for a beautiful harvest.

Roger Auster, FXU’s sports executive officer and incoming vice-president participation, said: “The games are a great opportunity to try out lots of exciting sports and activities.

“We had more people than ever on campus this year and it was great to see students, staff and local people trying something new and enjoying themselves.”

Anyone interested in bringing something new to the event next year is invited to email sport@fxu.org.uk.
