Some of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous operettas were brought to life on Monday at the debut of a new singing group in Mullion.

Featuring the vocal talents of Angela Agutter Thomas, Hannah Pascoe, Rob Murdoch and John Iles, accompanied by Kathleen Trewhella, around 100 people filled the parish church of St Mellanus.

Here they enjoyed songs from the Mikado, HMS Pinafore, Yeoman of the Guard and the Godoliers.

The evening raised £450 for the Friends of St Mellanus Church, which fundraises for the maintenance of the Grade I listed building.

Organiser Mary Druce said: “We did very well indeed. It was well attended and a wonderful night. It’s obviously something that people still enjoy a lot.

“We were amazed by the number of people that turned up.”

Parish priest Father Shane Griffiths was heard saying how pleased he was that the building was being used for something other than religious occasions.

The group is now available to book for charity occasions, where they will perform free of charge so that all the money raised goes to the charity.
