The arrival of spring was marked in traditional style in Germoe when primary schoolchildren performed maypole dancing.

The whole school gathered in the parish church for a short service, at which some pupils read prayers and sang songs, before heading out onto the village green where a maypole had been set up.

Here they performed a range of dances with ribbons, before all the pupils took part in The Gallop.

This involved youngsters from reception through to year six organising themselves into two lines and then “galloping” down the middle in pairs.

The boys wore white shirts and black trousers, and the girls wore gingham dresses and flowers in their hair.

School music teacher Christine Judge had been practising with the children ahead of the event, and musical accompaniment for the dances came from Jill Warden on accordion.

The dancing was a precursor to Germoe Feast Fair on the Saturday, when the church and school gathered for a joint fundraising day on the school field with stalls, a barbecue and games.
