The Culdrose Military Wives Choir, known as ‘The CuldRoses’, has celebrated its second birthday.

To mark the occasion the choir recorded the song ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams, which is being offered for free download from today.

The group dates back to May 18, 2012, when a group of women came together to form a choir, inspired by Gareth Malone’s success on TV series The Choir at military bases in Devon.

The choir has since doubled in size, and has performed at some of Cornwall’s most prolific events including Armed Forces Day at Events Square, Falmouth, the Emergency Services Ball at Pendennis Castle, and even their own concert to a sell-out theatre at the Hall for Cornwall.

Musical director Georgina Davies said: “The CuldRoses are pretty special. From the humble beginnings of a choir that had little musical experience to a tight team that now creates beautiful musical performances covering repertoire from John Rutter to Pharrell Williams, the ladies’ musical talent now has them in demand to perform in venues across Cornwall and Devon, and we happen to have great fun doing so.”

The choir’s chair Victoria Breen said: “This is a milestone we’re really proud of, and it was such fun to record the track. We’d like to thank Georgina Davies and Martin Wren at Mullion School for their recording facility and production.”

The track can be found at www.soundcloud.com/culdrosemilitarywives/happy Victoria added: “We celebrated accordingly with a party and our own awards giving, and now we’re going to focus on a packed schedule of performances this summer at both civic and military themed events. “It’s not just about performing however, the choir brings together a group of women that help one another through the bad times, celebrate the good times and all of us sing our way through it together.”

The one downside to the choir is that it often has to bid farewell to members when their family is redrafted. Victoria said: “We want to extend an invitation for new members located across Cornwall; you do not have to be attached to RNAS Culdrose to join.

“We welcome women that are partners of serving personnel, veterans’ wives, those who work in their local military community and those who serve in the military. Please do come along for a taster session without obligation.”

The choir meets on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm, at the Culdrose Community Centre in Helston. Those interested in joining, or booking the choir for an event, can make contact by emailing culdrose@militarywiveschoirs.org
