Fundraisers hope to surround Porthleven Harbour in pound coins this bank holiday weekend as part of three days of funding for a Gambian school.

The Power of the Pound series of events are being led by Ali Calvert in support of the Mariama Mae School that she founded in the Gambia, with some of the proceeds going back into Porthleven.

This Saturday and Sunday there will be children’s entertainment from noon until 4pm each day, with TBC Records offering their time and expertise in a music event at Out Of The Blue to boost funds. Live music and DJs will be playing from 1pm until 11.30pm both days.

Businesses in Porthleven are being offered the chance to buy either half a metre or a metre or more of “pound coins” to donate and help them make their way around the harbour.

The general public is needed to get involved as well, and are invited to come and line up their pound coins throughout the weekend, with collections still being accepted on the Bank Holiday Monday.

The aim is to raise £20,000 with part of the donations also going to support of Porthleven School and the youth of Porthleven.

Organisers say they will keep fundraising until they have achieved their aim, through further events.
