CAST to take part in Open Studios event in Helston
Updated 12:27pm Saturday 24th May 2014 in News
CAST will be open its doors up to the public this weekend when artists take part in the Open Studios event for the first time.
The normally closed studio doors at the 3 Penrose Road building will be open between 11am and 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, with free admission.
It is now nearly a year since the first artists moved into the studios, thanks to the Cornubian Arts and Science Trust taking on building originally given to John Passmore Edwards as a Science and Art School for Helston, which was then extended as a secondary school.
Among the artists showing off their work will be figurative painter Nicola Bealing.
She described Open Studios as a “two-way process”, saying: “It is chance for the public to see in, but also for artists to account for themselves.
Although the majority of artists in the building are painters – Mike Hoggett, Juliette Paull, Mark Hedger, Shelly Tregoning, Tim Pryke, Ben Sanderson and Joe Skinner, as well as Nicola – the CAST building also houses sculptors Amy Thomas and Oliver Irvine, who work under the pseudonym ATOI, filmmaker Roger Thorp, photographer James Hankey and printmaker Sally Cole.
Although the building still needs considerably more renovation, the work carried out in the last six months means two or three new studios will soon be ready for additional artist tenants.
