Bus operator First Kernow will be making changes to its services from Sunday 1 June, which will include running more frequent services on the popular visitor routes between St Ives, Penzance and Land’s End.

Many of the changes are prompted by Cornwall Council’s major re-tendering of bus services which it contracts from operators. First Kernow has retained its contracts for all routes on re-tender, but there are a number of changes.

The company is also taking the opportunity to make some changes to the routes it operates commercially without subsidy from the same date.

Commenting on the new timetables, Alex Carter, managing director of First South West, said: “We are pleased to have retained almost all our local bus service contracts with Cornwall Council. Working closely together, we have also been able to add value for the Council and travelling public by making available additional services at our risk and cost.”

These include:

• The re-introduction of a Penzance town service, with journeys running through to the major supermarkets to the east of the town centre

• A shopper bus service from Mylor Bridge to Truro

• The restoration of evening and Sunday services for St Day and the mining villages

• An extension of the 101 St Austell - Eden Project route, by kind agreement of First’s Eden Project partners, to serve Luxulya Speaking about the new services,

David Edwards, manager of Cornwall Council's Passenger Transport Unit, said: “The council would like to express gratitude to First Kernow for its commitment to securing as comprehensive a network as possible.

“To achieve this, there has been some re-working of routes and timings which, it is hoped, will meet the needs of those in social need throughout Cornwall's scattered and sparse settlement pattern. Access to services is a key principle of Cornwall Council and this bus network is a major element of that commitment.”

Details of the service changes can be found at: www.firstgroup.com/cornwall The information is also on Twitter and Facebook, at www.twitter.com/FirstCornwall/ and www.facebook.com/FirstCornwall/ A comprehensive timetable booklet covering all First Kernow services will be available soon.

New timetables also will be published and are available now to download individually on the website. The new timetables will available from First travel shops in Penzance and Truro bus stations from the end of May.
