Royal visit for Porthleven, Helston and Mullion - TODAY

First published in News

Porthleven and Mullion’s storm hit harbours are to receive royal recognition today.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester are to visit Porthleven together as part of a two-day tour of Cornwall, continuing into tomrorow.

They will meet the mayor and other town councillors, together with representatives of organisations based at the port, plus see the harbour that had to be cleared of boats when its defences were broken by storm waves.

The couple will also jointly visit Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance before splitting up to visit other areas.

The Duke, Prince Richard, who is first cousin to the Queen and 23rd in line to the throne, will see Penzance Promenade, visit Camborne Pool Redruth Food Bank at Centenary Chapel, Camborne, and tour Godolphin House, as well as meet with 6th Battalion The Rifles at Moresk Drill Hall in Truro.

Meanwhile the Danish-born Duchess, Birgitte, is to visit Mullion Harbour, which was also affected by storm damage at the start of the year, plus take a tour of Trenance Chocolate Factory in the village, Origin Coffee in Helston, and the TR14ers at Camborne Wesley Methodist Church.

Tomorrow the couple will visit Porthmeor Studios and the Tate Gallery in St Ives before parting again, with the Duke travelling to the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro while the Duchess sees Leach Pottery in St Ives and Kidz R Us at St Ives Theatre.

The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester live at Kensington Palace in London.

I hope they enjoy their visit, it would appear rather a lot to do in two days. The weather is certainly in their favour this morning.

Very funny, Hfotw

No, it was the 23rd in line to the throne, and thinking if 2nd in line to the throne has waited 65 years, what chance has Prince Richard got ?

I think the last time a reigning Monarch visited the Lizard Peninsula was about 1845 when Queen Victoria was here, and that in those days would have taken some effort: so no real chance of seeing Queen Elizabeth 2nd coming here.

Although I believe the Queen used RNAS Culdrose as a matter of convenience when wanting to get back to London last year after her exhausting trip to St Ives,Penzance and St Michael's Mount

They may only be 23rd in line to the throne, but I would not say no to their bank balance though. Mine is currently £1.67. Looking on the bright side, I get to visit Porthleven several times a week.

Are you having a dig at Porthlevens Cornwall Cllr? Lol

I would be more interested in popping down into Porthleven from Helston if it was a firework display, than two members of the royal family that probably no one even knew who they were until they decided on this visit. I bet if nothing had been said, and they just turned up and walked around with the Porthleven mayor, people would have just thought they were Cllrs from somewhere else or similar.

No not at all. I do not do "digs", I realised after I posted, it could be misinterpreted. I was not even referring specifically to Porthleven, re Councillors.

Who are these people anyway, born into their positions, why should we make such a fuss, what does it do for Porthleven? the town council should invite someone who has actually done something of their own merit, not got there by bloodline. we didn't invite them, they invited themselves.

Makes me laugh with our Cornwall Cllr though, he goes on about those people that are troublesome and loud, and people making the loudest noise, read his blog, nice dig Cllr Wallis, yet I think he has more than enough to say himself, and laps up the attention on a visit by royals. Of course it's ok for him to have an opinion that's always right just as long as everyone's else is wrong i think. Who was loud enough to get a petition against the last leader of the council though. If that wasn't loud I don't know what is.

If you have a problem with Councillor Andrew Wallis, then I suggest you take the issue up with him. It is as easy to email someone as it is to post on here. If you have a problem with his blog, then I suggest you do not read it.

My point is this, I thought he was quite a good Cllr compared with some of what I hear about Helston ones, then some guy in Porthleven mentioned his blog, so I read it, I thought it was hypocritical about people being troublesome and loud, I also read your letter a few weeks ago in the Packet about the car park. I couldn't understand why you didn't agree with my post on here because if you had a problem with the car park I guessed you wouldn't think he was a very good Cllr either. I also thought his comments on the royal visit we're a joke too. I don't think he's a good Cllr. How did he have time to see the royals and not be doing proper council work that affects the local residents.
