An open day is being held in Coverack this Saturday (May 29) to encourage more people to join the Nare Point Coastwatch.

The free open day at St Peter’s Hall, starting at 1.30pm, is a chance for the public to find out about the National Coastwatch Institution at Nare Point, and see what the volunteer watchkeepers experience.

This will include being able ‘spot’ vulnerable vessels, ‘plot’ their position and ‘report’ any incidents.

The NCI is entirely comprised of these volunteers who provide the eyes and ears along the coast, monitoring radio channels and providing a listening watch in poor visibility.

Stalls at the open day will include ‘nearly new’ items, plants, a tombola and children’s games, with cream teas and homemade cakes available.

The NCI is currently looking for volunteers for eight or 12 hours a month keeping a visual watch at the mouth of the Helford river.

For more information about volunteering contact David Dewar (St Keverne) on 01326 280890 or Lesley Suddes (Helston) on 01326 572110.
