They might not quite have made it all the way around Porthleven Harbour with pound coins but fundraisers over the bank holiday still managed to collect a respectable £2,550.

The three-day Power of the Pound event was led by Ali Calvert in support of the Mariama Mae School that she founded in the Gambia, with some of the proceeds going back into Porthleven via the school and youth projects.

Her ambitious aim was to surround the harbour in pound coins whilst having fun in the process.

Although the weather proved less than favourable on Saturday and Sunday, when there was children's entertainment from noon until 4pm each day, the sun shone on Bank Holiday Monday - despite rain everywhere else.

Ali, who works at the port's Costcutter, said: “The weather was great on the last day. We actually stood there and saw black clouds everywhere, but we had a summer's day in Porthleven.”

TBC Records gave their time and expertise in a music event at Out Of The Blue to boost funds, with live music and DJs from 1pm until 11.30pm.

Businesses in Porthleven were offered the chance to buy either half a metre or a metre (or more) of “pound coins” to donate and help them make their way around the harbour, with the general public also invited to get involved.

Ali said the whole event went “really well,” adding: “It was just a really good event to get people talking about the schools.”

She acknowledged that she had never expected to make it all away the harbour in coins in just three days, saying: “That would have been a massive thing to do. This was the launch of trying to do it. We just wanted to go out and give it a go.”

Ali is now deciding on future fundraising events, which will probably depend on whether she can obtain a licence.

If she achieves her ultimate aim of surrounding the harbour it would produce an overall amount of £20,000.

Ali thanked all the local businesses that supported the event, including the Royal Navy for providing the marquee that was very much in use on Saturday and Sunday.

“I'd really like to thank all the local people for donating their pounds,” she added, also giving her appreciation to the entertainers should gave their time for free and the musicians from Out Of The Blue.
