Falmouth’s International Sea Shanty Festival committee are busy planning the first ever Gala Concert which will take place on June 14 with all profits going to the RNLI.

The event is to be staged at the Princess Pavilion with tickets costing £15, but the Packet has two to give away to one lucky competition winner.

The festival runs from June 13 to 15 and has attracted interest from across the globe.

It has grown to become one of the largest of its kind, attracting thousands of visitors to the town and has raised over £36,000 for the RNLI so far.

Last year was the most successful yet raising more than £6,500 for the charity despite the challenging weather.

This year’s festival has something for everyone. Groups will be performing on main stages, in pubs, restaurants, in the street and for the first time ever, at the Princess Pavilion. Expect to see The Exmouth Shantymen, Scheepsfolk, Nordet, Shake a Leg and Dutch Uncle.

Town manager and chairman of the organising committee, Richard Gates said: “We’re excited for this new addition for 2014 with all the profits going to the RNLI.

The Gala Concert offers something for those who want to experience a different environment to many of the traditional Shanty venues across Falmouth.”

Sea Shanties are traditional work songs with rhythms that helped sailors and fishermen work together whilst hauling ropes and hoisting sails. Shanties are a rich part of Cornish culture and are still being written today.

Tickets for the gala concert can be bought online at falmouthseashanty.co.uk where the full programme of events can also be viewed.
