After winning the title in 2013, Powells Garage in Redruth has again made the shortlist for this year’s Motor Trader Independent Garage of the Year award.

One of just four finalists in their category, owners Heather and Ken Powell will be at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on July 9 to hear the final outcome of the 2014 competition. This is the third time they have entered and on both previous occasions – in 2006 and 2013 – they emerged triumphant.

“It would be wonderful to achieve a hat trick but we’re certainly not counting our chickens – if anything I think we get more nervous each time,” said Heather.

“These awards are a really big deal for the whole team and we’re extremely proud to have got to this stage again. A judge has already visited this week so now all we can do is wait for the announcement in July.”

First established by Ken’s father, Reg Powell, in 1953 in Agar Road, Redruth, Powells Garage moved to its present site on the Barncoose Industrial Estate three years ago. Comprising two MOT bays, state-of-the-art workshops, used car sales and the very latest technology, the business currently employs fifteen people – including Heather and Ken’s two sons.

Powells’ competitors in their category final are ACC UK in Hampshire, Russell Automotive Centre in London and Star Tech in Dorset.
