The mayor of Helston has celebrated the launch of his civic year with a service at the parish church.

Mike Thomas was joined by his fellow town councillors, mayors from other towns in the area and representatives of Helston organisations for the Sunday afternoon service at St Michael’s Church.

The mayor chaplain, Canon David Miller, gave the address, in which he emphasised the roles of conviction, communication and hospitality, particularly in relation to civic duties and responsibilities.

The packed church also sang well-known hymns, accompanied by Richard Berry on the organ, and listened to a variety of musical contributions from Helston Community College’s senior choir and Helston Chamber Choir.

During the choir’s performance a trumpet solo was performed by Sean Sjoholm, which received warm applause.

The Rev Dorothy Noakes, the Rev Jane Bradbury and Betty Booker were in attendance, whilst Diane Barlow led the services intercessions.

The service was preceded by a parade of councillors and other dignitaries, which also involved the town’s air cadets, council staff and townspeople, all led by Helston Town Band.

Afterwards the town band led the congregation back to the Corn Exchange for light refreshments.
