The husband of the founder of Falmouth’s Pink Wig Events is about to embark on a mammoth challenge which will see him cycle 2,500 miles around the UK, calling in at all the Royal Navy search and rescue bases, including those on the Shetland Islands and the Outer Hebrides.

Colin Hicks, a former Navy aircrewman will start from his former base at RNAS Culdrose on June 27 and aims to be back there five weeks later at the end of the ride.

“I will be cycling an average of 80 miles per day in whatever weather is thrown at me,” he said. “Hopefully along the way I will collect donations from supporters and together we can make a difference.”

Colin, who lives in Falmouth with his wife Sally, spent 28 years in the Royal Navy, but for the past seven years has worked for civilian search and rescue company, Bond Offshore Helicopters, based in the North Sea.

“In 2009 our world was rocked when Sally was diagnosed with stage three HER2 positive breast cancer, a particularly aggressive form of the disease,” said Colin. “During her chemotherapy, radiotherapy and mastectomy surgeries, Sally formed Pink Wig Events, along with some passionate friends. They have developed a successful fundraising organisation and have raised so far in the region of £35,000.”

Colin’s Base 2 Base for Breast Cancer cycle ride will call in at 27 airbases before he returns to Culdrose where he is aiming to arrive on July 27.
