There was a great turnout at the launch of Helston Museum's support group last week.

The grand opening of Para Hen Hellys, which translates to “Helston heritage team”, provided a buffet supper and entertainment to celebrate the event.

More than 55 people turned out to show their support, and many of those attendees signed a subscription to the cause.

Museum curator Katherine Ashton said: “We were very pleased with the launch."

Pledging £25 per year, subscribers to Para Hen Hellys will provide much needed finance for the maintenance and running of Helston Museum. In return, these subscribers receive a number of perks, including private views for upcoming exhibitions.

The museum, which holds one of the largest collections of social history in Cornwall, had their council funding cut ten months ago. Without monetary support they have been relying on charitable donations since then.

Organising is the South Kerrier Heritage Trust, which has taken over the running of the museum.

Their mission statement is: “To manage, maintain and develop Helston Museum for the benefit of the public and to advance education in the heritage, arts and crafts of the South Kerrier area.”

Running it is a small group of trustees, with curator Katherine Ashton and assistant curator Tracy Clowes.

They have also gained loyal support from 60 local volunteers who have been providing help for the museum's operation.

Ms Ashton said: “Since we lost our council funding we've been trying to get the place noticed. There were lots of locals who never even realised we were here. But now we're just trying to get more people through the doors.”

With boosted coffers, the museum is developing their displays, improving their educational services and has plans for a few exciting exhibitions over the summer.
