TRIATHLETES swam, peddled and dashed around Falmouth on Sunday morning as the Cornwall Tri Series rolled into town.

More than 250 participants entered the race which saw them swim 750m, ride 20km and then run 5km for the fourth leg of the 2014 series.

Starting at 8am on the sands of Gyllyngvase beach, the competitors dived into the chilly sea waters for the first part of the triathlon before hopping on their bikes to ride round Falmouth and out towards Mawnan Smith before returning to the town.

After getting off their saddles, the athletes then finished the race with a run along the seafront up to Pendennis Point and looping back down to the beach for the finish line.

Winning the men’s race was Michael Bichmore in a time of 1:09:01, saying it was a good feeling to win.

Bichmore said: “It is the first time I’ve done it and it was a good race. “Running down to a big group of people cheering you on at the end was fun.

“It was a bit chilly but more worried about jellyfish. It was perfect conditions really as there was no wind to fight on the bike and it was quite cool on the run.”

Leading the women home was Alice Nicholas finishing the race in 1:19:06.

Afterwards, Nicholas said she enjoyed the race and getting to dive into the sea.

“I love the sea it’s my favourite bit I relish that,” she said.

“I was quite pleased to come out with the top men from the water and my tactic was to try and hang around on the shoulder of the guys on the bike. “They do whizz past you which can be a bit discouraging but you just have to keep going.

“I found the bike quite hard as I swam quite hard but I was really pleased with the run.”

The next leg of the Tri Series will take place in Wadebridge on June 29.
