An environmental education project based on the Penwerris estate in Falmouth will be able to expand after receiving funding from the Cornwall Community Foundation.

The Seeds Project received £1,430 funding from the foundation’s business arm, the Cornwall 100 Club, to enable them to continue running every week and to expand their activities into outreach workshops for schools and young people's community groups.

The project, which provides environmental education to children, young people and the general public, supports and promotes healthy, sustainable lifestyle choices, and has held weekly drop-in sessions for parents and their children over the last eight months.

Charlotte Garratt from the Seeds Project said: "This wonderful donation from Cornwall 100 Club is going to make a huge difference to our work bringing environmental education to life and making it accessible for families across Falmouth and Penryn. To have the businesses in our community involved in improving the lives of the children in our community means so much and shows what we can achieve working together.

“Whether we are building insect hotels, writing our booklet for new families or planting edible plants for everyone to enjoy, we couldn’t do it without working in partnership. Thank you to everyone involved from the families of the Seeds Project."

The Seeds Project currently offers a two hour session every Friday which consists of both indoor and outdoor activities including growing fruits and vegetables, enhancing wildlife habitats, understanding eco-systems, recycling and other games and activities.

At the same time as facilitating the parent and child activities they create a space for parents to learn about and exchange their experiences of saving money and the environment by using eco-friendly baby products and swapping old baby and child clothes.

The Cornwall 100 Club is a group of like-minded businesses which want to invest in their community, and was awarded a total of £40,300 in 2013 and £17,694 in March 2014 to help improve lives and communities throughout the county A second round of funding will be available later this year and details on how to apply or contribute are available at www.cornwallfoundation.com.
